ABOUT THE EVENT

  With the rapid development of the video game industry and its design language, video games have become a significant part of current culture. Charlie Brooker, creator and writer of Black Mirror, says that in a contemporary era where social life is fully gamified and social activities are organized by game mechanics, players are no longer a specific group of people but could be anyone. On the other hand, video games have also expanded from a mere entertainment activity to a more spiritual experience, and a “new artistic complexity” has been demonstrated. If the logic of gaming—follow, interact, and share—has influenced our daily social interactions, then a certain “art” in gaming, which has yet to take shape, might have already participated in artists’ thoughts and practices. Besides analyzing gaming itself, “More Than Just Games” focuses on how to understand, transform, and use the potentials of game mechanics in order to make everything playable. “Play and experience everything” seems to be prevailing motto of the moment. X Museum invited four artists whose works are closely related to video games to share with the audience their understanding and thoughts on what is play, what to play, and how to play from the perspective of video games and the art of gaming.
