About The Event
As a cultural and social phenomenon with Chinese cultural characteristics, shanzhai (a Chinese term that usually refers to knockoff products) is a reflection of the persistent contradiction between Chinese consumers’ admiration for Western brands and their aesthetic taste for “large, vulgar, and elegant.” It also represents the exceptionally rich creativity of those private producers. X Museum invited designers Butterfly Minmin and hhs to join a conversation about their works and share their thoughts on topics related to shanzhai, Chinese aesthetics, authorship, and originality.
The two guests are both grounded observers and practitioners who vigorously put the cultural appropriation of shanzhai in their works, dismantling and extending its possibilities as a means of creation with humor and ignoring the authority of famous brands. In this conversation, the guests shared with the audience their creative practices on subverting the standards of originality, authorship, and ownership. About The Artists
