About The Event

Christina Quarles’s abstract gestural paintings focus on the misreading of personal identities. As the inaugural public program of the exhibition Christina Quarles: Dancing by tha Light of tha Moon, this talk explored the misinterpretations and misunderstandings faced by the queer community in Chinese society and its cultural environment. Artist Boihugo and writer Shaonan Xi shared with the audience their experiences of living in China as queers, taking into account their own experiences as well as the cultural and social environment of contemporary China. They also discussed topics such as masculinity, the commercialization of queer culture, and relevant phenomena and issues within queer communities. The conversation aimed to draw out the moments when the queer community and culture have been intentionally or unintentionally misread, and respond to contemporary queer life in the local context with guests’ research findings, observations, and experiences.
